Physical Literacy: A Leadership Policy Primer

Abstract: Unfortunately, many students take physical education because they have to, not because they want to. Instead of rolling out the ball, now is the time to roll out new PE programs that are relevant and coherent. This presentation offers a strategic roadmap (vision, policy, and implementation) to inject new life and authentic physical literacy. It's time to examine curriculum options, eLearning strategies, the PE waiver, online alternatives, summer school, community resources, and teacher evaluation. Learn how your PE program can become a springboard to a lifetime of better fitness and health . . . and improved test scores today.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to... create a coherent vision and implementation plan for high school physical education that reaches the full range of student interests and abilities . . . not just athletes. Participants will understand the judicious use of technology to create better student outcomes. Principals will be able to establish policy that ensures course integrity and coherence across all options: in-school, the PE waiver, online, and summer school. Administrators will be able to identify and use new tools to evaluate teacher effectiveness.
Attendees will understand how new approaches to physical education have the potential to positively "move the needle" with regard to student adoption, parent support, and teacher effectiveness without additional financial investment. Attendees will gain insights into the power of blended learning (the "flipped classroom") for what has traditionally been a participation-oriented subject.
